Amarillo taxpayers are not a piggy bank for crony pet projects. They’re parents, grandparents, and business owners that can spend their money far better than politicians and bureaucrats.
While our current Mayor will claim that Amarillo’s tax rate one of the lowest in the state, the reality is Amarillo pays the 4th highest effective tax rate in Texas and Texans pay the 4th highest property tax rate in the nation. We can and we MUST do better.
The goal of tax policy should be to raise only the amount of money needed to fund legitimate functions of government while doing the least amount of damage to the economy and respecting the principle of treating taxpayers equally.
I am a strong fiscal conservative who will work hard to balance the budget and fund priorities without raising our taxes.
I will work hard to ensure that our drainage and other collected fees are spent on the purpose they were intended for.
I will work hard to implement policy to ensure that such collected fees are not rolled back into the general fund and used to cover budget shortfalls such as the ballpark, HOT tax or any other crony pet project that is not the role of city government.
